Getting started

How do I put something in a space?

Select something and press ⌘C twice quickly. What you copied goes into a space on the right side of the screen. A single ⌘C copies as usual and KnackTack does nothing.

You can also copy the usual way (for example with right-click > Copy) and then choose Put What You Copied in a Space from the KnackTack icon in the menu barsystem tray. To type something from scratch, choose New Blank Space.

Where is KnackTack? I don't see it in the Docktaskbar.

KnackTack has no Docktaskbar window. It lives as a small pin icon in the menu bar at the top right of your screensystem tray at the bottom right of your screen. Windows 11 may hide new icons behind the ^ arrow; to keep it visible, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Other system tray icons and turn KnackTack on. Opening KnackTack again while it's running brings all your spaces to the front.

Why does KnackTack ask for Input Monitoring?

macOS needs your permission before an app can notice a key press. KnackTack uses it only to watch for ⌘C, so it knows when you press it twice. It doesn't record any keys and never changes or blocks them.

If you'd rather not grant it, set a shortcut for Put What You Copied in a Space in Settings and choose The shortcut only. KnackTack then stops listening to the keyboard and doesn't need the permission.

Can I use a keyboard shortcut instead of pressing twice?

Yes. In Settings, set a shortcut for Put What You Copied in a Space, and optionally one for New Blank Space. The shortcut must include ⌘, ⌃ or ⌥, and can't be ⌘C.For example, Ctrl+Alt with a letter. Ctrl+C can't be used. Then you can switch the trigger to the shortcut only: copy once as usual, press your shortcut, and what you copied goes into a space. If a shortcut does nothing, another app may already be using it; try a different one.

Which languages does KnackTack support?

English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish (Latin America), French (France and Canada) and Portuguese (Brazil). KnackTack follows your system language by default; you can choose a different one under Language in Settings.

When nothing happens

I pressed ⌘C twice and no space appeared.

Check these, in order:

  1. Is KnackTack paused? If the icon shows a pause sign, choose Resume from its menu.
  2. Is Input Monitoring on? Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring and make sure KnackTack is switched on.
  3. Are you in a password field or Terminal? When “Secure Keyboard Entry” is on, macOS doesn't pass key presses to other apps, so pressing ⌘C twice won't work there for a moment. Copy once, then choose Put What You Copied in a Space from the menu bar icon.
  4. Did a note appear next to the pointer? KnackTack explains when it can't take something: files can't be put in a space, and content marked private by its app (such as a password manager or a private window) is skipped on purpose.
  5. Is the app on your exclusion list? In apps listed in Settings (by default Keychain Access and Passwords), copying works as usual but nothing goes into a space.
  6. Is the app running as administrator? Windows doesn't let ordinary apps notice keys pressed in it. See below.
  7. Were the two presses quick enough? The second press needs to come within about half a second of the first.
Another app opens too when I press ⌘C twice (for example, DeepL).

Some apps, such as DeepL, use the same gesture, so both respond. KnackTack doesn't block other apps. If you'd like to keep them apart, set a keyboard shortcut for KnackTack in Settings and switch the trigger to The shortcut only.

Why does pressing Ctrl+C twice do nothing in some apps?

If the app is running as administrator (for example you chose "Run as administrator", or the app needs administrator rights), Windows doesn't let ordinary apps notice keys pressed in it, so KnackTack can't tell you pressed Ctrl+C twice. This is part of Windows' security, and KnackTack never asks for administrator rights to get around it.

In that case, copy as usual, then either click the KnackTack icon in the notification area and choose Put What You Copied in a Space, or set a shortcut for it in Settings and press it after copying.

Why doesn't something I copy in a private browser window go into a space?

When you copy, some apps mark the copy as not to be kept, telling the system not to save it in clipboard history or sync it to other devices. Password managers do this, and browsers' private (InPrivate or Incognito) windows usually do toosome apps' private modes do too.

KnackTack respects that mark: it doesn't read the copy or put it in a space, and only shows a short note beside the pointer saying the app marked it as not to be kept. To put something in a space, copy it in a normal window.

Why does a shortcut I set do nothing?

Another app may be using the same keys first. Some apps (such as translation, screenshot or input tools) take a key before it reaches KnackTack, and the system doesn't tell KnackTack, so it can't warn you. Choose another shortcut in Settings. If KnackTack says "Windows couldn't use a shortcut" when you set it, another app has already claimed those keys; please choose another one too.

Why can't I see KnackTack's menu when I click its icon while Start or Search is open?

The Start menu and the Search panel are part of Windows and always show above every app's windows. KnackTack's menu does open, but it is hidden behind them. Press Esc (or click an empty part of the desktop) to close Start or Search first, then click the KnackTack icon.

Spaces

What can go in a space?

Plain text, formatted text (bold, italics, lists and links are kept), links and images such as screenshots. Files can't be put in a space.

When you copy a file in File Explorer, or a picture in some image viewers, the clipboard holds where the file is, not its content, and KnackTack never opens files on your PC. To put a picture in a space, capture it with Win+Shift+S and press Ctrl+C twice, right-click it in your browser and choose "Copy image", or copy it from an app such as Photos or Paint.

How long does a space last?

A space clears itself 7 days after your last edit. Each change to its text starts the 7 days over; viewing, moving or copying from it doesn't. The clock icon shows how many days are left.

When less than a day is left, the space shows a reminder with a Pin button. A pinned space never expires. Click the clock or pin icon on a space to switch between the two.

How do I get a deleted or expired space back?

Right after you delete a space, an Undo button appears for a few seconds. After that, open Recently Deleted from the KnackTack icon and click a space to bring it back, or choose Restore All (Pro). Recently Deleted keeps your last 5 spaces in the free version and your last 10 with Pro; older ones are removed for good.

Spaces that expire while your computer is off or asleep also go to Recently Deleted, and KnackTack tells you when you're back.

My spaces disappeared from the screen.

They're probably tucked away. Look for a small handle on the right edge of the screen and click it, or simply open KnackTack again to bring every space back. If Tuck Spaces Away Automatically is on, spaces slide away a few seconds after the pointer leaves them.

If Keep Spaces on Top is off, other windows can cover your spaces. Click any visible space, or open KnackTack again, to bring them all to the front.

Why doesn't a space show the website it came from?

KnackTack only shows what the browser includes when you copy. Chrome, Edge, Safari and other Chromium-based browsers include the page address. Firefox for Mac doesn't, so spaces copied from Firefox show only the app.Chrome and Edge include the full page address. Some browsers, such as Firefox, often include only the site's address; then the address on the space opens the site but can't take you back to the page or highlight the text, and its tooltip says so. To jump back to the exact spot, copy in Chrome or Edge.

Can I save a space as a file?

Yes. Click the share button on a space to send it as a file, or drag the button to your desktop or a folder. Text becomes a .txt file (or .rtf if it has formatting), and images become .png files.

Do spaces sync between my computers?

No. Spaces stay on the computer where you made them. KnackTack never uses the network.

KnackTack Pro

What does KnackTack Pro add?

KnackTack is free with one space at a time. KnackTack Pro is a one-time purchase that adds:

  • Up to 10 spaces at once (you can set a lower number in Settings)
  • Side by Side: lay all your spaces out next to each other
  • Pile: stack your spaces and pull them open with the handle
  • Jump back to the exact spot: open the source page scrolled to the copied text, highlighted
  • Recently Deleted keeps 10 spaces instead of 5, and Restore All

There's no subscription and no trial that runs out.

I bought Pro, but KnackTack shows the free version.

Choose Restore Purchase… from the KnackTack menu bar icon or in Settings, and make sure you're signed in to the App Store with the Apple Account you used to buy it.

Make sure you're signed in to the Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account you used to buy it, then quit and reopen KnackTack.

I use both a Mac and a Windows PC. Do I need to buy Pro twice?

Yes. KnackTack for Mac and KnackTack for Windows are sold separately by the Mac App Store and the Microsoft Store. Sharing a purchase between them would need an account and an internet connection, and KnackTack has neither.

Refunds

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are made through Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, signing in with the Apple Account you used to buy KnackTack Pro. Apple decides on refund requests; we can't issue refunds ourselves.

Purchases are made through the Microsoft Store, so refunds are handled by Microsoft. Request one from the Order history page of your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com. Microsoft decides on refund requests; we can't issue refunds ourselves.
